Citizen Tickets Cop

April 19, 2008

We’ve all seen it, the cop turning without his signal, speeding without his lights or siren on, or parking in a no parking zone when there was no emergency. Some people have had enough and done something about it, like minor youtube celeb, Jimmy Justice, who goes around new York City videotaping and questioning city employees, traffic wardens, and police about their illegal parking. His actions, although entertaining, and awareness raising serve to do little other than to piss off the state actors involved. A young lawyer in Oregon has taken a different approach, using his knowledge of the law he has figured out how a citizen can issue parking tickets to police, and has already done so at least once.

As the Portland Mercury reports, Eric Bryant was sitting in a Japanese resturant when he saw a cop park under a no parking sign, then come inside, order lunch, and started watching the game on TV. When Bryant asked the officer about his choice in parking spots he acknowledge that he was parked in a no parking zone, but that there was nothing wrong with that as he was a cop. The officer then asked “If someone broke into your house, would you rather have the police be able to park in front of your house or have to park three blocks away and walk there?”

According to Bryant “If he had acknowledged and corrected his error, we could have avoided this whole thing but instead, he kept watching basketball and told me he wasn’t doing anything wrong.” This bothered Eric, so he took the next step and initiated violation proceedings against Officer Stensgaard, racking up $540 in fines for the officer for “illegal parking, illegal stopping, obeying parking restrictions on state highways, and illegal operation of an emergency vehicle or ambulance” if the officer in convicted on his court date May 23rd.

My favorite quote from Mr. Bryant: “Citizens should be concerned that he used his status as an officer of the law as justification for breaking the law,”

    How did he do it?

You know what, if I did this to a cop here in D.C. I would be arrested for pissing off a cop. They don’t take no crap here. They abuse their power, they don’t follow the same laws they are there to enforce, it’s all a big pile of crap. I’m glad someone finally stepped up, took the risk of being arrested and got the story published. This guy is my hero. I hope the cop gets fined and actually loses his job. I used to live in Vegas, there aren’t enough cops there to worry about speeding or parking tickets so all they do is drive around and turn a blind eye to the problem. Funny thing is, in Vegas, it will take them 2 hours to show up for a complaint on a neighbor, put you on hold if you call in a shooting (my experience was exactly 1 minute after I called 911) but if there is a copper thief, literally 20 cops showed up in the SW part of Las Vegas to arrest some Mexican that had about $20 worth the stolen copper.

Police in this country are pathetic. Unless you live in a town with 50,000 people or less, they are worthless. They don’t want to do the paperwork associated with the arrests/fines, or they just don’t want to get their lazy asses out of their cars. Being union workers really screws up the “protect and serve” part of their job. Isn’t that their entire purpose? To Protect and Serve?

I must revert back to 1992 when Ice T told us to kill a cop. Don’t kill one, but if you see one breaking the law, say something, take a picture/video on your phone. We all have them. See if he can talk his way out of that. Cops should have 3 strikes just like criminals. If they have 3 legit complaints about them, they should either have to do community service (work for free) or some other sort of punishment. To have a person that makes $40-90K a year literally do nothing, it’s ridiculous. Since they don’t actually have a “quota” in most areas, they aren’t expected to do anything but be seen.

Enough is enough. Cops, you work for us. No more chicken SH** tickets, do your job. Leave us alone.

A pissed off white citizen of the US.

good for you, I think that the police should also follow the law and not have any special rules for themselves. When we make a delivery we can not just park where ever we want and make a delivery and then go for lunch just because we have a big truck. I say go for it and I hope this officer does get ticket for legal parking.

I love this guy. He’s got balls of steel!

  5. AngryDriver! Says:

That is crazy!! He better be punished because he is expected to follow the same laws and regulations that he is suppose 2 enforce! The nerve of him to make the statement about breaking into the house. Well yeah I would expect you to park out front then! Its an emergecny and your being paid to do that!! That comment was just an ignorant. HOPE HE HAS 2 PAY!

  6. Logical Man Says:

He doesnt get a break. He’s on call as he eats lunch. Now if he gets a call, he has to drop his food, pay his bill, and run to his car. I hope you get raped and murdered because this cop took too long to get to you. I’m sure that at your job, you get a break. I’m also sure that you don’t save lives at mcdonalds. Its bullshit like this that makes cops hate their jobs and start hating people. Why don’t you try being nice to a cop for once. He’s not the trial or the jury. Its his job to keep the peace. So i’m sorry if he didnt like when you mouthed off and tried to run when he caught your ass stealing that VCR. Try not breaking the law or being a dick and I’m sure that things might start going your way. Now congress is going to have to waste their time passing some law that makes cops exempt from stupid laws. stupid laws are there to nail bad guys that you dont have shit on. Example: al capone, tax evasion, seriously. Now you wont be able to nail the cops that deserve it.

  7. Anon Coward Says:

What a bunch of nonsense. Unless this is some 1-horse town where there is only 1 cop on duty at a time (NOT THE CASE) then the ossifer has a lunch break (thank you unions). In that case he does not NEED to get back to his car in a big rush, because they are not assigning calls to him. He needs to walk the extra 20 feet to a real parking space and quit abusing the privilege.
Signed, A Firefighter/EMT who parks the rig LEGALLY even though we ARE still on duty and ready to respond to calls. We do something called “run” when a call comes in. That must not be in the union rules for these cops.

    ‘Logical Man’

I’m sorry but let me see if I have your point correctly. You are in favor of the police using ‘stupid laws’ to punish people whom they believe to have committed serious crimes, but for which they have no evidence to substantiate their belief? Well that makes perfect sense to me, I mean here in America lack of proof should never get in the way of punishing someone a cop thinks is probably bad.
